I use a four year rotation plan. This method keeps me organized and free from worry that I'm not covering something important.
The first year we study Ancient History, reading about it, doing art and crafts from that period, studying biology, and so on. The next three years are Medieval, Colonial, and Modern. Then in 5th grade we start over at the Ancients again. We repeat it again begining in 9th grade. Each time through we learn about these civilations and people and read literature and do projects on a more advanced level.
Science is studied in a four year rotation as well: Biology (including Humans), Earth Science and Astronomy, Chemistry, and Physics.
We study math, reading, and writing every day. At third grade we add on foreign language every day. Some of the children are also studying music (piano lessons) every day. Then we have a subject of the day to cover the rest of the topics.
Sometimes on Fridays we take a day off from our usual studies and have an activity day, like "Pirate Day" or "Pioneer Day" and learn and do crafts, worksheets and activities that go with our theme.
If it's a rough day then I just make sure the three R's happen and we drop the rest, picking it up the next week.
Our week looks like this:
